When Rebecca McCormack opened the doors to her Exchange District boutique over six years ago she never imagined where the ride would take her.
Rebecca’s hardwork, business savvy and fashion sense have brought her opportunities that most girls only dream about, like owning one of “the” fashion boutiques in Winnipeg and designing her own line of dresses.
This past August, Rebecca moved her successful boutique from it’s original location on Albert to a brighter, bigger location down the road on McDermot Avenue. The new location’s soaring 20-foot ceilings, bright 12-foot windows and historic feel are the perfect backdrop for her dress collection.
Designing her own line of dresses that leave bridesmaids excited about what they’re wearing wasn’t Rebecca’s original plan. When Cake Clothing first opened they carried great fashionforward dresses that were versatile and easy-towear and bride’s began snatching them up for their bridesmaids. “We’d get in 4 or 5 of one dress and someone would come in and buy them all for their bridesmaids,” she says. “My customers were asking me for more bridesmaid dresses so it was a natural progression to move into designing and carrying these dresses,” she continues.
One look at the dresses Rebecca designs and it’s easy to see why bride’s and bridesmaid’s can’t get enough of them. And if you need any alterations, they’ll take care of that for you too. Rebecca’s uses her day to day life and surroundings as inspiration when designing. From watching TV, reading magazines, going out with friends, living in the Exchange District and looking at old magazines in the library, her inspiration is familiar to all of us. She also spends a lot of time listening to her customers and what they tell her about the dresses. All of that combined with her great fashion sense sums up to designs that are practical but fabulous!
All of this hasn’t gone unnoticed as Cake dresses are sold in 40 stores across Canada and making their way into the US.
